This morning I just happened to read past Dell creates a “data center” in a briefcase. Will someone PLEASE slap the next perpetrator of ridiculous hype?
Dell’s “data center” consists of 2 servers, a Gigabit Ethernet switch, and a few miscellaneous parts in a case. Does this REALLY qualify as a “data center”? I mean, I’ve used the term “micro data center” to apply to small installations before but this is a “nano data center”! And how special is this, really? Give me a 19″ rackmount equipment case, 2 Rackable Systems half length 1U servers, and a few odd parts and I’ll build you your own “data center briefcase” too.
I recently commented on the hype about Disney “greening” their data center. What was their secret? Fix the air leaks in their raised floor, replace missing filler panels, and turn the temperature up. This is news?
This is like the paparazzi and the IT version of the National Enquirer. Just because it has a famous name attached to it doesn’t mean it’s anything special.
