2000-2009: A Technological Retrospective

Wow, what a difference 10 years makes. In a couple weeks 2009 will be over, and with it a whole decade of technological innovations. This past decade brought us everything from the Sony PlayStation 2 video game console to augmented reality. Obviously, I cannot mention every single innovation that came out in the past ten years.  However, I can mention those innovations that were, at the time of their release, revolutionary in some form. The following is a list of just that:

2000
  • Innovation:
    • Sony PlayStation 2

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • The console not only played highly-graphical video games, but was also the first of its kind to play DVD movies. At the time, stand-alone DVD players were fairly expensive, costing $300 or more. The popularity of the PlayStation 2 helped push the DVD format into the mainstream market.

2001
  • Innovation:
    • Apple iPod

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • The original iPod not only helped bring Apple back into the forefront of modern technology, but also sparked the MP3 revolution. This is the device that pushed CD players out of the market and replaced it with hard disk based music jukeboxes.

.

  • Innovation:
    • Microsoft Windows XP

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • This is the operating system that most people and businesses still use today. It is a force to be reckoned with, even for Microsoft which has released two newer operating systems (Vista, 7) in more recent years.

.

  • Innovation:
    • ReplayTV

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • ReplayTV was the original TiVo,  in a matter of speaking. It was the first DVR to come to market that gave TV viewers the ability to pause, fast forward, rewind, and even record live TV broadcasts. Today, all cable and satellite TV providers offer DVR’s to their customers.

2002
  • Innovation:
    • Mac OS X Jaguar

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • The new version of Apple’s operating system included improvements in stability, speed, and added several new applications. The addition of Quartz Extreme processing allowed all graphical tasks to be handled by the systems Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), instead of the Central Processing Unit (CPU).
2003
  • Innovation:
    • XM Satellite Radio

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • Subscription-based satellite radio was the biggest change in radio since FM. XM’s main selling points were coast-to-coast channels and fewer commercials than FM radio. The service has become so popular that several automakers now offer it as an option in their vehicles.

  • Innovation:
    • Intel Pentium M Processor

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • Intel new mobile processor standardized wireless networking in laptops and spurred the growth of wireless hot spots. Today, free wireless Internet access can be found all over the world in coffee houses, restaurants, and even in airplanes.

.

  • Innovation:
    • Apple iTunes

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • By pairing their iTunes music program with their iPod MP3 players, Apple effectively figured out how to get consumers to buy music online, which is something the record labels themselves could not do. What made it possible was iTunes intuitive interface and the limited restrictions on usage.

  • Innovation:
    • Camerphones

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • Cellphones with built-in cameras, such as the LG VX6000 (shown), came to market in 2003 and were a huge hit. So much so that nowadays all modern cellphones, even basic models, are capable of taking and sending pictures.

.

2004
  • Innovation:
    • Bluetooth

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • The new wireless communications protocol made big waves in 2004 when Bluetooth headsets became the must have accessory for cell phones. A few years later, after their benefits were noticed by US governmental officials, use of Bluetooth headsets became mandatory in the US.

2005
  • Microsoft Xbox 360

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • Microsoft’s latest video game platform introduced their redeveloped Xbox Live service, which allows gamers to play against each other all over the world. The console has recently also become a social and media hub, with features such as Facebook and Netflix integration.

2006
  • Innovation:
    • Youtube

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • This video sharing site sparked an Internet revolution by allowing videos to be uploaded and shared for free.

  • Innovation:
    • Toshiba HD-A1

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • Toshiba’s original HD-DVD player sparked the movement to high definition movies at home.
2007
  • Innovation:
    • Nintendo Wii

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • The Nintendo Wii’s major selling point is it’s motion controls, which adds an extra level of interactivity to it’s games.
  • Innovation:
    • Apple iPhone

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • The extreme popularity of the original iPhone sparked the touch revolution, inspiring other phone makers to offer models with touch sensitive user interfaces as well.

2008
  • Innovation:
    • Macbook Air

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • The popularity of the Macbook Air inspired other notebook makers, such as Dell and Lenovo, to offer smaller and more portable notebook models.
2009
  • Innovation:
    • Augmented Reality

  • How was it revolutionary?
    • Augmented reality is a brand new technology that promises to change the way we see the world around us. It started this year with smartphone applications, such as Layar and Yelp, that provide users with information based on what they point their phones camera at.

If you have read this far, then you should realize by now that the past 10 years has brought a number of revolutionary technologies. I simply cannot wait to see what the next 10 years brings us. Look out for my next Technological Retrospective sometime in December 2019. That is, if WordPress and the Internet are still around….

Dell Pulls Out of MTV's "Jersey Shore"

Well, another one bites the dust. Computer make, Dell, has pulled its ads from the hit MTV show, “Jersey Shore,” calling the program derogatory and the company “condone or support ethnic bashing in any form.” This is the 3rd sponser to be pulling their ads from the show. Dominos and American Family Insurance were the first to be scared away from this program.

But even though the advertisers are running for the hills (also a lame ass program on MTV), viewers are still sticking around. Jersey Shore, last week, pulled in more than 2.5 million viewers Thursday night, making it one of MTV’s most watched programs.

Of course this may have something to due with the fact that one of the cast member’s Snooki (yes, Snooki) was punched in the face at bar, while the cameras were rolling. MTV has since edited the video out of the broadcast, but if you understand the meaning of the word YouTube, I’m sure you can find the video with no problem.

Door closed.

Kim Kardashian's $$$

Even though people get very excited about developing new technologies, it seems to hard to monetize them.  Against all odds, Twitter is profitable.  Dell says that Twitter generated $6.7 million in revenue this year.  However, a few users are finding ways to really make their tweets count.

AdAge made a slideshow showing the value of different companies and their tweets.  The most notable of these slides was Kim Kardashian’s:

The text reads: “Kim Kardashian’s Tweet Stream, $10,000 a tweet.”  A TWEET!

What is she famous for again?

She has 2.7 million followers on Twitter (of which I am one) and is the top celebrity on Ad.ly, a service that allows celebs to monetize their social media.

While her tweets might be worth $10,000, I am curious how much value a company actually derives and how much she makes.  Just looking at her feed right now, she posts several times a day and posted about ‘Reebok Easy Tones’ just a couple hours ago.  It’s clearly a product placement, but the followers don’t seem to care (she is choosing the products to place carefully…I suddenly remember why she is famous).

If marketers are willing to pay, and people are willing to buy it, then why shouldn’t Kim profit?

What will be our “entry level laptop”?

I’ll start my blog with this question. :-)

We’re finally planning to get our own laptop.

(dati kasi puro hand me down from my brother…)

We have wanted to get one for the longest time.

But I guess we just needed a VERY justifiable reason as to why we should get – and our VERY justifiable reason now is for Jessie.

That of course would mean that we will be able to use it as well.

Kaya … Yahoo!

Now, pardon my lack of knowledge on these things, thus this question…

So what will I get (for Jessie? wink … wink)

Mac Book which has Core2Duo processor and shared graphics memory

Or Dell Inspiron 14Z, Lenovo B450 and HPs, more or less same laptop, which has Core Due and dedicated graphics card (the brand of the card I wasn’t able to get).

Sorry but a Mac Book Pro is not a justifiable choice yet…

As always, the sales person would ask me, “Para saan nyo po ba gagamit?”

And I would readily reply, “Ohh the usual stuff, and probably a lot of graphic stuff (pero not YET professional level) of editing photos and movie making which Jessie likes to do…”

So, what will it be folks?

Pwede ba magpa survey?

Dell sells $6.5 million via Twitter

From USA TODAY

Dell announced today that it has generated more than $6.5 million in sales via Twitter microblogs.

Dell has set up social network accounts and made some 3 million direct connections with users of Twitter, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, Orkut, Flickr and YouTube, says Manish Mehta, Dell’s vice president of social media and community.

The PC maker has culled one million Twitter followers, and has tripled revenues coming in from Tweeted offers for Dell PCs in the past year, doing business in a dozen countries. Though a fraction of the company’s overall revenues, $6.5 million is viewed by the company as a significant new channel to reach customers, says Mehta.

FROM Bloomberg…

Dell Inc., relying on social- networking sites to drum up sales of personal computers, said its promotions on Twitter have helped generate more than $6.5 million in orders for PCs, accessories and software.

The number of users signing up to get Dell’s tweets has risen 23 percent in the past three months and now numbers 1.5 million, said Manish Mehta, vice president of Dell’s online unit. More than 100 employees send out the tweets — Twitter’s 140-character messages — over 35 different channels.

Dell, the third-largest maker of PCs, started using Twitter two years ago to reach new customers. The $6.5 million represents the total amount generated through direct customer interactions on Twitter over that time. While those sales are a fraction of Dell’s $61.1 billion in annual revenue last year, the company sees Twitter as one of its most significant ways of interacting with customers, Mehta said.

“It’s a very vibrant channel for us and it’s growing aggressively,” Mehta said in an interview. “It’s not just our reach and growth that has progressed, it’s that it’s happening globally.”

Dell reaches Twitter users in 12 countries, including the U.S., Brazil, Mexico, China and Japan. Brazil’s Twitter users spent $800,000 in the past eight months, Mehta said.

San Francisco-based Twitter Inc., which started in 2006, is the third most popular social-networking service in the U.S., according to Reston, Virginia-based ComScore Inc. Dell also relies on Facebook Inc., MySpace Inc. and YouTube Inc.

Dell, based in Round Rock, Texas, reaches 3.5 million people across the Web through social networks and its own community sites, including Direct2Dell.com and IdeaStorm, Mehta said.

The company ranks behind Hewlett-Packard Co. and Acer Inc. in worldwide sales of PCs.

Windows 7

A few months ago I spilled a jug of water (literally a jug) on my Dell laptop computer. Mind you, I had over four years of solid use out of the thing but buying a new computer is never fun.

When I was in BC I noticed the new Dell netbooks. There were so small, cheap and they came with a version of Windows XP. I really didn’t want to switch to Vista so this was a major selling point. It was funny actually because when I got my first laptop back in my first year of University it was all about getting the most for my dollar– the biggest screen, the fastest RAM, the largest harddrive– now it was just about getting a convienent laptop that would work with just what I needed it to do and nothing more.

I ended up going with the Gateway series 11 netbook. It came with an extra gig of RAM at not extra cost but sadly was only available in Windows Vista. However, Gateway has a promo where you can apply and have sent to you a free copy of the new Windows 7. Aside from the fact that I am still unsure as to how Microsoft deduced this to the 7th version of the OS but I am pretty impressed with what I see thus far.

The best part is that the Windows 7 installation sports a built in recovery system so the information you have on Vista will not get lost in the upgrade.

I’ll let you know how this works out for me.

Multiple Monitors

Several months ago I got a Dell Latitude E6400 laptop to replace my overworked Dell Latitude D410.  Along with the laptop I got a new advanced E-dock which included two monitor outputs, so I recycled an old smaller monitor that had been relegated to the stores to have a dual monitor set-up.

I find the two monitor set-up really useful and I frequently have different applications in different windows as you might expect.  However I struggled with Excel as I would frequently want to copy data between large format spreadsheets and I would have loved to have one on each screen … but they simply opened as child windows and I Alt-Tab’d between them.

I guess I never really stopped to think about it, but one day my subconscious kicked in and I realised that if I chose not to open the files directly I could open multiple instances and then open a file in each.  Then each instance of the application can be dragged to a different monitor.  Hey presto a spreadsheet in each window.

Death to you! iphone Army building Apps!

Right,

Bad news all round on the run up to Christmas. As of last week I am reduced to posting through my iphone or sneakily (or not so) through my work computer. Last week my year old Dell Xps 1530 died a savage death, much like the Xps 1730 before it. In theory I would like a laptop that lasts more then 2 months after it’s warranty expires…

The loss of my machine means the loss of a great deal of photo media that was being edited (both Wargames and Anime). Needless to say I am a little more than miffed. One week in and I feel isolation sickness set in as I can’t check Thunderbird every 10 minutes :P

On the plus side, this has pushed me to look elsewhere and a replacement has been ordered as of today. Despite warnings of “ooh it’s not a gaming machine!” etc I have opted to go the Apple way. Fingers crossed my new entry-level Macbook will be passing through my doors in 7 days…

"Mac Attack"

So why Mac? simply put..I have never owned one. I have had Alienwares, Dells, HP’s and played about with laptops for the last 5 years (being a weekend road warrior and Ex Warcraft addict). While a laptop will never replace the beloved gaming rig, the portability that it brings to my life style makes it a necessary item (despite what my parents say!). Now don’t worry this is not turning into a Mac Fanac site (maybe :P ) but needless to say it’s on my mind!

Due to some very nice work incentives, I managed to max out the Macbook and make quite a saving. Winging its way to me is the following:

Macbook white 2.26ghz Intel Core 2 Duo(stock)

Nvidia 9400m (stock)

4GB DDR3 Ram

500Gb HDD

The upgraded Ram and HDD are where I made a very tasty saving, bringing the cost of this machine to less than a Mac Book Pro 13″ ^^

ibodge it!

Being a iphone user, like many I have been scouring the web for useful apps, some of them even to do with Wargaming!. The reason I am doing this is the apparent lack of Mac OS support from Army builder, unless I opt to run it via Bootcamp  (not their fault, it’s a niche company with limited funds). On my travels I have found not only a Mac friendly but also iphone portable app called ibodger. This app is free from the itunes store and has been advertised on the Privateer Press forums. This week it has been updated to include MKII points costs. I urge Warmachine players with iphones to download this app, as it’s that helpful! iBodger

Kabuki continues to push forward "Swords, Sorcery and Bewbs"

So thats the state of play. Not a bad time to upgrade really, as it gives me the heads up to prepare for the January releases of Warmachine MKII (let’s be honest the stuff we really want to see!) also this time away from the net will give me time to focus on progressing the Death Guard Project. Busy looking month for me…Also I need to prepare my review on Kabuki Miniatures full current line of gorgeous miniatures (order in the post as I type), I have had the priviledge of being in contact with one of the company owners and I have to say, the product line is looking taking a very impressive turn as we move into 2010. Finally listed on their site is the fabulous “Executioner” figure (21st Century Pin Up range), but expect Sci-Fi Samurai, Egyptian God engines and more! Once the full set of figs and Laptop (might be handy..) I will post pics and post my reviews.

Still waiting on the new figure from Soda Pop Miniatures, but from the green its such a cool looking figure! Bubblegum crisis meets Pokemon haha! Well worth the look and I will be sure to share/review when the chance arises.

Thanks for reading

DELL Experiment on Chrome OS

Source:  http://www.zdnetasia.com/news/software/0,39044164,62059696,00.htm?scid=nl_z_tgws By Stephen Shankland, CNET News.com

Tuesday, December 01, 2009 09:25 AM

Dell has released an experimental version of Google’s Chrome OS adapted for its own Mini 10v netbook.

Earlier this month, Google released the source code underlying the Chrome OS browser-based operating system; the first version of the software won’t be complete until 2010, when it will become available only when purchased on a computer. But because it is open source software, others can sample it today if they’re willing to build it themselves.

That’s what Doug Anson, a technology strategist for Dell, did.

“I’ve been doing some tinkering over the last few days working to get our Dell Mini 10v up and running with ChromiumOS. As of late yesterday, I can report success,” Anson said on the Direct2Dell community blog.

Anson released the software so it can be loaded onto an 8GB USB flash memory drive. But he offered cautions along with tips to those considering using it. “Use this image at your own risk,” he said. “It comes to you totally unsupported and very minimally tested.”

Chrome OS uses Linux under the covers, but Google intends for the software to run only browser-based applications. That obviously leaves a lot behind, but Google is among several allies working to gradually improve the Web and browsers as a foundation for programs.

In July, Anson said in a blog post that Dell will evaluate Chrome OS, but he didn’t make any commitments to offering a product using the software.

The initial version of Chrome OS is for netbooks, but Google intends to spread it to higher-end computers after that.

Why Windows 7 Will Not Drive a Monster PC Hardware Refresh Cycle

Why do conventional wisdom and analyst palaver assert as a matter of metaphysical certitude that the launch of Windows 7 will rapidly drive a robust PC refresh cycle?

Dell, in its attempt to move past its startlingly poor quarterly results announced last week, once again pointed to this theoretical groundswell of enterprise spending as the engine for its increasingly more theoretical turnaround. But even as Microsoft touts the record-setting sales pace of Windows 7, new PCs don’t appear to be riding those coattails.

Two reasons why:

  • No new hardware required: Unlike previous Microsoft OS platforms, Windows 7 does not require upgraded hardware to run as speced.
  • Learning to love lean and mean IT: The corporate recovery, as anemic as it is, is being driven by cost reductions and tighter controls on expenditures. Now that companies are much used to doing more with less — and getting good at it – CTOs and COOs will likely wring more value out of their current systems and upgrade more slowly and cautiously than they have in the past.
  • For consumers, PC deals matter more than the OS: While it has made sense to wait for Windows 7 to arrive before buying a new PC, Windows 7 has not been a driver. Cheap netbooks and low-cost laptops are the stars of the consumer space — which has been driving the computer industry recovery – and Windows 7 just comes with it.

Dell Studio 17

Dell Inspiron 1750.

1. Dell Inspiron 1750 (тествания модел)

2. Acer Aspire 7736ZG-434G50Mn

3. HP ProBook 4710s

The Dell installation will provide 130,000 kW/h per year and shades the parking spots of the 56 employees who get to the lot first. Everyone else gets punished for being late by having to park in the sun.

back to the basics

Und was macht man da ??

Nun was mache ich denn eigentlich?
Da ja alle immer so schreihen ! OMG MATHE WTF !

- blrglarghs!

DELL 1555 mit MikroSatin-Midnight Blue-Oberfläche (jaja ich weiß Staub)

Was ich gut finde?:

Studio 1555 ~ 850€
- 64 Bit Wintür Vista (“kostenloses” Upgrade auf Win7 – 20€ Zoll/Lieferkosten x_X)
- Intel P7350 (2.0 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 3 MB L2 Cache)
- Intel (Centrino) WiFi Link 5300-Mini-Karte, (802.11 a/g/n)
- 4 GB DDR2 ( 800MHz)
- 512 MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570
- 320 GB Satan-Platte (aber 7.200 1/min)
- LiIo-Akku 85Wh (9-Zellen)
- 15,6-Zoll-WXGA-LED-Display (1.366 x 768)
- uuuuund… freaky Mikrosatin Oberfläche °_°’
- HIGHLIGHT: Tastenbeleuchtung … wuhuuu~

Blubb!: Fast vergessen, ICH WAR IM KINO !!

No meio deste ano a fonte (carregador) apareceu queimada.

Pensei: me ralei. Estou f.

Ken Segall - the Man Who Dreamed Up the Name “iMac” & Wrote the "Think Different" Campaign.

“Cult of the Mac” interviewed the author behind the famous “Think Different” Campaign. In addition to the “Think Different” campaign, Ken Segall was also the person who put the “i” in “iMac” when the product was first introduced. Interestingly, Steve Jobs did not like the “iMac” moniker when it was first purposed…but the name prevailed and the rest is history.

The interview was a very interesting read (and I highly recommend it) because it showed the kind of micro-management perfectionist-style Steve Jobs does at Apple Inc. Something as simple as a product name had to be perfect and Jobs made sure it was right. Not many would care to print a product name on prototypes “just to see what it looked like.” The article also showed the passion from which Apple products are created from. Segall, who also worked with Dell, mentioned the difference between Apple and the rest:

“Dell and Apple: It’s night and day,” Segall says. “It’s a transactional world Dell lives in. It’s all about numbers. Everything they say about Apple making products for themselves is true. Apple — it’s about changing the world. For everyone else, it’s about the money.”

"Ferrata delle Trincee" a once in a lifetime experience

“Ferrata delle Trincee” that was the name of our last hike (after two weeks in Solden Austria and a week in Italy) – the date 09/09/09 and I’ll never forget it. There are not enough adjectives in the dictionary to describe the thrill and awe of this full day in the mountains with the owner of the hotel of which we were staying – Michael, of WanderHotel Europa. No wonder the Italians are so proud of their Dolomites. The views are spectacular where ever you walk, sit, enjoy coffee, hike or climb.

It all started with a last minute retrieval of safety equipment. My brother Rick and I had never hiked “via ferrata” which means “Iron Way” in Italian. Michael takes his guests on routine hikes that range from 10 kilometers to as many as 18. Additionally, they include ascents of up to 1500 meters and or descents of up to 3000 meters (often you are airlifted via a “gondola” to a higher elevation to start your day.)

But this day was different. It was Michael’s day off. He wanted to hike without the group and wanted to thank my brother for coming back as a repeat customer. Rick is an enthusiastic maniac when it comes to the mountains, later on that in a moment. We were to meet Michael at 0700am. Neither of us had slept much as the sheer excitement of our first rock climb was at daybreak. We jumped into Michael’s new Audi (a machine made for Europe with it’s “Quattro” wheel technology) and took off to this mammoth of a mountain. The ride (an hour) was a thrill in itself. Mind-boggling curves, views, speed and control is what this 60-minute ride delivered while going through multiple quaint and beautiful Italian towns.

Exactly on the hour we arrived. There was a chill in the air, the clouds were low and we couldn’t even see where we were to climb. In hindsight, that was a good thing. We were in long pants, full-length shirt and jacket, pack, polls and a liter and half of water. Off we go, straight up. Within 10 minutes we were shedding the long sleeve jackets and rolling up the shirtsleeves. After a brief stop, it was onwards and upwards. Nonstop upwards. An hour later Michael said we had reached our first level with only one more to go. My face is drenched in sweat, my glasses are on my head as the heat from my breath and cold from the air rendered them virtually useless. I’m thinking to my self, great we’re half way there — not exactly.

The clouds were beginning to break. Far off in the distance I could see the top of an amazing mountain. I can honestly tell you that not for a moment did I think we could get there, or we were going there, or were going to climb that monster in a day much less at all. I just put my head down and plowed upwards. Michael has grown up in these mountains and for him it was a cakewalk. For myself however, the lactic acid in my muscles was beginning to burn. The kind you think is good for you as you push your outer limits. Even my brother Rick was dripping in sweat and kept looking back at me as in somewhat disbelief. As we continued onwards the clouds had given a clear picture of this behemoth of a mountain. I’m thinking he’s got to be kidding. Michael said there it is, we just need to beat that group of (10 hikers) ahead of us to the starting point so we need to move. Both Rick and I looked at each other and all enthusiasm was replaced with fear. Plane and simple, we were scared but not about to show it. Fatigued had already set in and we needed to hustle to the “via ferrata” hiking point before this group. I might add they were a good 200 yards ahead of us on a steep ascent.

Michael chose to abandon the trail and chose the straight line to our launching pad. Absolutely brutal, I was sucking air now more than ever. Big deep breadths when I could gather them. Finally after 150 minutes of burning and churning up the mountain we beat this group by a hair. I was surprised we climbed as fast as we did for how far we had come and the ascent of which was the steepest in our three weeks and estimated 80 miles of hiking. It’s amazing what a little testosterone, adrenaline and ego will do to get you where you need to be. We weren’t about to show weakness, no way, no how, period. After all the easy part (ha!) was over. Now it was time to buckle up, strap on the gear, bust out the helmet and start an absolute vertical ascent via iron cables built by the Italian military during World War I.

As a treat we received a heck of a history lesson from Michael. Their military used these mountains to protect their country from the enemy. At the top of these jaw dropping peaks were caves that the survivors lived in for four years during the war. Many lives were lost in these mountains and you can see why. A simple slip and a life is lost. Imagine dodging bullets and aircraft fire while trying not to fall off 1000 ft drop at 8500 ft. During storms the cables were a risky option. If just one bolt of lightning struck the cable the jolt would rip through the entire cable (top to bottom) killing anyone that may have had their grip on it. During the winter it was like holding on to ice and in the rain, equally as difficult. But they did, and they survived at least many of them. And by god, if they could in those conditions, that long ago we could today. Yeah right.

Rick was right behind Michael. In a crash course to beat the group ahead my brother didn’t quite catch on as fast as he wanted. After all, it was a straight vertical no easy rocks jetting out and he found himself in a quandary. Fortunately, the guide from the group recognized Rick was no pro. As he struggled, the guide explained the technique and pushed his right foot into a slot that would give him a break to grab his cleavers and move them upwards. Needless to say all that huffing and puffing up the mountain didn’t help because we were both exhausted. We let the group pass us up on the first possible ledge. The pressure was now off and Rick got clearer guidance from Michael. He suggested that Rick follow him and I follow Rick. I love my brother but is this a good idea I’m thinking? If he slips, I’m history. I agreed and Rick caught on and did well. Our first “iron way ascent” took the better part of 45 minutes to reach the top. Shortly thereafter was a bridge built between two peaks in 1916. We crossed it with beaming smiles. We had made it. Were we done? Not even. Another three hours of rock climbing and hiking prevailed as we scaled and descended in different points that dropped off into oblivion. Our final destination at the top was to reach a WWI tunnel that was 100 meters in length. You could see various points of machine gunning, areas to sleep or hide out and exits to run to if needed. We celebrated, ate a sandwich, said a prayer and descended and hiked another 5 miles to our car. All in all it was an amazing day. One in a lifetime sounds like a cliché but it was exactly that, a one in a lifetime experience. Thank you Michael, my brother Rick and above all God. Maintain Your Office Printer with Quality Laser Printer Parts

A laser printer should give you excellent print quality for text, graphics, and photos, and the equipment should be maintained with quality laser printer parts for peak performance. Parts wear out with regular use, and in addition to parts replacement, maintenance intervals should be followed. The maintenance kits include directions and parts, and should be installed at the manufacturer?s recommended time frame. Parts in a maintenance kit typically include paper pickup rollers, paper feed/separation rollers, a transfer roller, and a fuser assembly.

Commonly replaced parts of a laser printer include system boards, fuser assemblies, and toner cartridges. The system board provides electrical connections so the system can communicate. The fuser assembly uses heat and pressure to make the ink permanent on the paper. The toner cartridges (ink) can be remanufactured, refilled, or recycled, and need to be replaced based on usage.

Self tests should be performed when your printer is working well, so that an accurate comparison can be made when your printer is not working. Replacing laser printer parts and maintaining your laser printer assures that the printer performs as expected and you avoid premature failure. Check for software updates recommended by the manufacturer and clean and dust your printer regularly.

Today there are many trusted national seller of Lexmark, Hewlett Packard, and Dell printers, accessories, parts and suppliers available on internet. Journey at Dell till now

I always believed that the end of one journey(in this case IIIT) marks the beginning of the other(in this case DELL) and this journey for me has been as good as the one at IIIT if not better. Well the joining procedure began with a shocker as all the Dell selected students had to attend a induction program on May 13th which incidentally was about the mid date of the planned batch tour and we were told strictly not to miss out on the induction program. As if this shocker wasnt enough, they had more shockers in store left for me. Our offer letter stated that we were to join on or before July 20th and as expected all of the other joinees had selected the last date which was July 20th as the joining date so that they could make the most out of the last set of summer holidays they could get. If you are still wondering why was it a shocker to me then you are not wrong, even I wouldn’t mind a long summer vacation but my problem was that July 20th is my birth date and then this was not my 1st time that my birth date was occupied by some occasion [If you guys still remember 19th July,2005 was our joining date in IIIT and incidentally 20th July was my first day in an hostel ever and our first class took place on that day] .

During the morning session of the Induction day, we had a formal introduction of Dell IT in Hyderabad which mainly comprises of DBI and EBI [but it contains few teams of EST and DBA's as well]. After lunch we had a campus walk with our seniors at Dell in which they showed pretty much everything including the Gym, Bunker rooms, Badminton courts, parking lot, cafeteria etc and then they introduced us to what they said would be our home at Dell for the first few months (Training room ). The afternoon session comprised of Pay Package explanation and few other things I don’t remember at the time of writing this post but the sad part was that the pay package explanation seemed like Greek and Latin to me [while listening itself I was like I can ask my father about it later]. The day ended with a high tea with all the IT managers and I was surprised at the way there were interacting with us , they were ubercool and were cracking jokes on each other like anything. Incidentally I had a chat with my current manager on that day itself and He asked me whether We have the habit of drinking [there were few of my batch colleagues there beside me] except for 1, the other 3 of us replied ‘No’ then he stated that he wouldn’t like to have a person who doesn’t drink in his team in a cool way [Now only time will tell if I start social drinking but I think it is a more of a no than a yes]. The day ended with they giving us with a return gift to take home (

And then I had to turn up on our joining date at Dell with no knowledge of what the hell is going to happen. By the time I reached few of the other new joinees had already turned up at that place [Oh I haven't mentioned anything about them. Dell IT,Hyderabad had recruited 15 people from 3 colleges this year( 5 from IIIT, 7 from CBIT, and 3 from JNTU which comprised of 9 boys and 6 girls ( for more details I would like you to do the math with all the known facts and yeah please don't refrain from assuming a few facts )).  Surprisingly according to the Security, our names were not in the list of people who were supposed to join on that day but then I pointed out it to him that he was seeing the list of people who were supposed to join on june 20th instead of searching our names on the July 20th list. More shocks as our names weren't there on that list either and then finally after someone rang up the HR and told what was going on, we were allowed to move into the induction room. What happened in the induction room is all the blah blah blah blah stuff that people talk about (yeah, includes payroll(not that I am not interested), security, code of conduct, and blah blah) but the point to be mentioned about is the fact that we were handed a file with about half a dozen forms to fill in with all sorts of confusing columns and headers which we took about 5-6 hours to fill(most of them weren't complete yet … and the fact that they needed so many details was irritating in the first place and was an mission impossible kind of a thing in the second place). By the time I reached home it was already like 8.30PM and it was supposed to by birthday …. with no enthusiasm left whatsoever all I could do was relish on good homemade food.

The 2nd day was also kinda boring with us filling the forms which we had left incomplete the previous day. By god’s grace [I couldn't have taken it any longer] we were asked to move onto the floor after lunch. In the evening we were taken to the training room in the IT floor for a session from the Training & Resource Manager who flew all the way from Bangalore (I know its not that far away). He told us about the training program, schedule, instructors etc and left us with the schedule of the whole thing. The next 3 days were really interesting and that is from where I shall continue on my next blog post.

PS 1: One of my friends happens to be from Rajahmundry which incidentally happens to be the place from which I came to Hyderabad. People from Rajahmundry are kind of haunting me(Not that I have a bad record over there) … they did in IIIT and now over here too.

PS2: As always at least one of my batch mates is younger to me …. Why do people not let me occupy this place :’( .

Updates from office:

1) Slowly gaining in lost trust among the BAs with more efficient work and giving them almost realtime updates (I know I generally keep people updated).

2) Our offsite was a success and has helped me know a lot more people among the EBI floor(EBI is the department I work for JustInCase You didnt know).

3) Listening to black eyed peas has become boring … Need to find some new band.

4) Nov 10th is expected to be the day I put my project in production so I have set myself a deadline of Nov 3rd.

Pełni on rolę jednorożca .

Top 10 Enterprise Features in Windows 7

Microsoft® Windows® 7 Enterprise is designed to meet the evolving needs of users and IT professionals alike. Explore the top 10 features that will also make CIOs smile.

Desktop operating systems are geared toward making life easy for end users—and Microsoft Windows 7 is no exception. Performing everyday tasks and working on new projects is designed to be more intuitive than with any previous Windows system. The Windows 7 OS is also designed to be fast, reliable, and more secure than the Windows XP and Windows Vista® operating systems. Most importantly, productivity enhancements help remove barriers that prevent access to information, regardless of where the data is stored.

At the same time, the Windows 7 Enterprise platform helps simplify management by making it easy for IT organizations to meet diverse client requirements. It offers enhanced security and control by building on the security foundation of Windows Vista, and delivers additional flexibility for IT teams charged with securing desktop and mobile client systems and data. In addition, because administrators can often leverage the same tools and skills they use with Windows Vista for Windows 7 Enterprise desktops, laptops, and virtualized environments, the transition requires minimal training—freeing IT staff to focus on strategic projects.

Ten key features of Windows 7 Enterprise work in conjunction with the Microsoft Windows Server® 2008 R2 OS to advance enterprise efficiency:

  1. DirectAccess connectivity: As the workforce becomes increasingly mobile and many employees work remotely at least part of the time, the question of productivity becomes increasingly critical. To be as productive as they could be in the office, workers must be able to connect to enterprise resources seamlessly and securely.
The DirectAccess feature enables mobile users to access enterprise resources simply and securely when out of the office—without the extra step of initiating a virtual private network (VPN) connection. This capability helps to simplify IT management by allowing for an “always managed” infrastructure, which helps ensure that client systems used by mobile workers remain healthy and updated.
  2. BranchCache™ local caching: For large enterprises with several branch offices and centralized applications, low network responsiveness and slow connection speeds can create significant bottlenecks that hamper productivity and lead to a subpar user experience. The BranchCache feature helps address this issue by caching content from remote file and Web servers at the local branch office, which allows branch office users to access important information quickly. It supports commonly used network protocols to reduce the need for additional IT training. In addition, the BranchCache feature supports network security protocols such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and IP Security (IPsec), helping to ensure that only authorized clients can access requested data. It also helps to reduce wide area network (WAN) traffic, boost network application responsiveness, and increase efficiency for end users accessing the content.
  3. AppLocker™ application control: For enterprises that demand the highest levels of compliance, administrators can leverage the AppLocker feature to dictate which applications are allowed to run on desktop and mobile client systems. This feature provides a flexible, easy-to-administer mechanism that allows IT organizations to exercise control over the infrastructure while also giving workers the ability to run the applications, installation programs, and scripts that they require to be productive. As a result, enterprises can enforce application standardization while also enhancing security and streamlining compliance.
  4. BitLocker™ security: Because mobile workers often take sensitive information with them on their laptops when they leave the office, encrypting hard drives and removable storage devices can go a long way toward preventing security breaches.
The BitLocker feature gives IT administrators and end users the ability to right-click on a drive to enable BitLocker protection. By supporting automatic creation of the required hidden boot partition, BitLocker advances key management over previous versions of Windows. In addition, the BitLocker To Go™ feature offers data protection for removable storage devices and gives the IT team enhanced control over how removable storage devices can be used.
  5. RemoteApp™ access: Employees need the same programs when they are working remotely that they use when they are in the office—but installing and maintaining those applications on every laptop can be a serious hurdle for IT staff.
The RemoteApp feature for Windows 7 Enterprise is designed to enable end users to access the programs they need without actually installing them on the remote computer. Because IT staff can make application updates centrally, this feature helps save administration time and reduce maintenance costs. Updates can then be distributed automatically when users log in.
  6. Multilingual support: Instead of creating a separate image for each language used in the enterprise, administrators can use Windows 7 Enterprise language packs to support several dozen different languages using a single Windows master image.
  7. Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI): Designed to improve end-user productivity while also simplifying desktop administration and security for IT staff, VDI supports desktop functionality using virtual machines hosted on servers. It allows users to access their desktops remotely, as well as reuse virtual machine images to boot a physical desktop, laptop, or workstation. VDI also helps reduce IT maintenance overhead by centralizing management and avoiding the need to perform patches and upgrades on each physical computer in the enterprise.
  8. Image management: For organizations that support multiple operating systems and configurations, image management can be a complex, time-consuming, and costly task. But with the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool in Windows 7, IT administrators can build and service OS images using a single consolidated tool set.
Image management tools built into Windows 7 Enterprise allow administrators to add optional components; add, enumerate, and remove third-party device drivers; add language packs and apply international settings; and maintain an inventory of offline images. Administrators can also use DISM to manage Windows Vista system images, which helps to reduce administrative overhead and costs for mixed deployments.
  9. Power management: Desktop and mobile computers are responsible for a significant percentage of the power consumption in most enterprises. Because cutting down on energy consumption can help IT strategists improve the bottom line, Windows 7 Enterprise includes a variety of power management features designed to increase platform and processor efficiencies. For example, Windows 7 helps improve idle efficiency by minimizing resource utilization and enabling processors, disks, memory, and network activity to go into low-power states during extended periods of inactivity. In addition, technologies such as adaptive display brightness and low-power audio help conserve energy and contribute to an efficient, cost-effective enterprise.
  10. Windows PowerShell™ command-line shell: Used with Windows 7 Enterprise, the Windows PowerShell command-line shell and administrator-focused scripting language can help increase management control and enhance IT productivity. The tool helps simplify management of Windows-based servers, workstations, and applications through an interactive shell, scripting functions, and graphical interface applications. It offers more than 130 standard command-line tools and utilities as well as a consistent syntax to enable IT teams to accelerate automation easily. It is also designed to work with existing IT infrastructures and existing script investments to facilitate early adoption, learning, and use.

In these ways, Windows 7 Enterprise can help significantly boost client security and productivity while simplifying end-to-end IT management and control. For large enterprises intent on advancing business efficiency while reducing total cost of ownership, the question is not whether to migrate to Windows 7—but when.

HP, Ubuntu is no more, if it ever was.

According to the blog of ever increasing entropy, HP have decided to kill off it’s FreeDesktop based Mi netbook on the same day that Microsoft Windows 7 came out.

In a way this is both surprising and not surprising to me.

It’s a surprise because I never figured Hewlett Packard for being this spineless and cretins. Throwing away large sums of development money in order to help short term OEM deals with Microsoft? Well sure, HP might be in pain from OEM contract terms from Microsoft Windows and it might make business sense this quarter. But surely someone in HP must have a sore arse, or are they all cowering behind their “good for business” mantra which must be fairly strong to protect them from doing the right thing for their future business.

Now I’m not surprised that the Mi with Ubuntu pre-installed has ended. Yes that’s right folks, it was Ubuntu and it was even developed by Canonical on behalf of HP. They paid a pretty penny to have their own interface and customizations put into the OS.

But look at what they did, they rejected the idea of including the Ubuntu brand with their shipments. The only mention that it was a FreeDesktop at all comes from a note about it being “Linux based” (whatever that means these days).

There is a mutually beneficial arrangement when it comes to brand marketing in the community. Dell sells machines with Ubuntu on them and both Dell and the Ubuntu community benefit from that arrangement. Instead of my LoCo group marketing Ubuntu for just old machines that came with Windows, I could safely point people at Dell and let them buy new computers complete with Ubuntu. Dell benefits because they get customers from the community advocacy and the community gets a big well known OEM to give it credibility and a partner that can ship working systems for cheap.

But HP didn’t want that, they wanted to control the branding of the OS and it’s not a surprise that they didn’t get many people from the Ubuntu community recommending their products. It’s not a surprise that every time someone said “Lets get me an Ubuntu machine” they went to Dell instead of HP.

Which is shame, because HP’s printer division is a much better collaborator. And most of my LoCo peers recommend HP printers simply because we can be almost pretty assured that no matter which one is bought, it’ll work.

So to get back to Microsoft, they’ve shaped the market to make Windows more attractive than it would be on a level playing field, they’ve manipulated OEMs to such a degree that it makes a mockery of anti-competition laws. If you’ve got any doubt of the reasons why bug #1 has to be fixed, it’s because we shouldn’t have to put up with this reduction in fair competition.

If I were dictator of the world, I’d tax any desktops shipped without a FreeDesktop dual boot.

Android This Week: Verizon, Dell Join the Party; e-Books Abound

The Android (s goog) world is getting bigger all the time. After much speculation, Verizon (s vz) this week confirmed the introduction of its first Android phone with a slick advertising campaign. The Verizon Droid, which is expected to be announced next week, will be made by Motorola. (The handset was previously dubbed the Sholes.) The ad campaign includes TV spots in the U.S. listing the various ways that the Droid is better than the iPhone (s aapl). Based on press kits sent to the media, the Droid is expected to start shipping Nov. 9.

Meanwhile, recent announcements are making it clear that Android isn’t just a platform for smartphones — it can be leveraged on other devices as well. No fewer than three e-book readers based on the OS were announced this week, including Barnes & Noble’s (s bks) Nook, Spring Design’s Alex, and enTourage’s eDGe. All three of the readers bring unique qualities to the e-book reader space, and having open-source Android onboard opens the door to a wave of possible applications on the devices. Given the closed nature of the Kindle, Amazon (s amzn) could have reason to be nervous.

Plus, Dell (s dell) was spotted in Thailand showing off a UMPC with Android under the hood. The 5-inch Dell Streak has no voice capability, but uses Wi-Fi and 3G to provide ubiquitous connectivity. Not much is known about the little gadget, or if the company will add it to its offerings. But the video demo of the device shows a very compelling handheld web tablet.
